Helping Each Other

“A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” – 1 Corinthians 12:7

One of the hardest things in youth ministry is helping students/teenagers discover their God given spiritual gift. Why? Because they are still trying to discover who they are as a person. But once they do start to figure that out, it’s exciting to watch!

One hump to overcome in this process, I think, is for students to understand that our spiritual gift is to be used to help others. The problem is that we live in a society that teaches us that it’s all about us. That we can, should, and sometimes have to leave people in a cloud of dust behind us as we take off to earn our ‘success’. It’s a struggle getting students to understand that that is not what is right. When it comes to helping others, sometimes it’s a the risk of our popularity, image, etc.

I truly love the gifts God has given me. It brings my great joy to use my gifts in teaching and explaining God’s Word to teenagers. My hope and prayer is that I can continue doing this until the day I die as an old, gray haired man. That is if teenagers will still want to listen and be around a guy like that!
