Summer Youth Ministry…is it? Part 1

Youth ministry only appears to slow down. On that calendar, things might look…bleak. But we all know, as youth workers, that it really doesn’t slow down. The ‘path’ of youth ministry just shifts a little. Here’s what I mean.

  1. Time to plan the fall! I think a good youth worker who wants a good reputation with parents should plan about a season in advance. This let’s them fill in their calendar ahead of time, put money away for any retreats, and to support you with leaders/volunteers for those events.
  2. Plan the teaching calendar. This is the time we get to sit down and focus on where God wants us to take our sheep/herd over the next year. This has to be strategic. We should know what we want them to look like when they graduate, so now is the “how do we get there” planning.
  3. Volunteer Recruitment! I know, it’s not the most fun thing to do, but it can be. Especially if you are asking the right people into your ministry. Our hope and prayer as youth workers is for a growing ministry. A growing ministry requires more staffing. It’s a great way to approach our potential volunteers. I can only imagine their excitement as you tell them right off the bat that your ministry is growing. Who doesn’t want to be a part of something that is growing. It means something is going right! For me, the first people I approach are my graduating seniors that are going to our local colleges. Why? Because I know them well and they know me well.
